Description
Produced at the Philadelphia Mint, the 1818 Capped Head to Left Half Eagle - STATESOF is part of the Capped Head to Left Half Eagles 1813-1834 series. All 1818 half eagles share the 48,588 reported for the year; the STATESOF portion of it is unknown. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a cap with curls of hair beneath and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. After a gap in production (1816-1817), half eagle coinage resumed with several die varieties, including the STATESOF error. Struck in 91.7% gold, 8.3% silver and copper, weighing 8.75 grams, 25 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #8121.
