Description

The 1818 Capped Head to Left Half Eagle - 5D/50 is a Gold Half Eagle from the Philadelphia Mint, belonging to the Capped Head to Left Half Eagles 1813-1834 series. The 1818 half eagle mintage of 48,588 covers every variety of the year; how many carry the 5D/50 is not recorded. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a cap with curls of hair beneath and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. After a gap in production (1816-1817), half eagle coinage resumed with several die varieties, including the STATESOF error. Struck in 91.7% gold, 8.3% silver and copper, weighing 8.75 grams, 25 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #8120.
