Description
Judd-41 is a tin restrike of the 1810 Classic Head large cent, one of the scarce private restrikes produced from discarded federal dies during the Civil War era. The obverse features John Reich's Classic Head portrait of Liberty facing left, with a hair band inscribed LIBERTY, thirteen stars around the border, and the date 1810 below. The reverse displays the standard wreath enclosing ONE CENT with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the border. The Classic Head design was used on large cents from 1808 through 1814. Like the 1804 and 1823 restrikes, these pieces were struck from original federal dies that had been retired and acquired by private individuals, produced sometime in the 1860s. The tin composition gives the coin a light silvery appearance and helps distinguish it from official copper strikings. These private restrikes, while unofficial, are eagerly sought by collectors as tangible connections to the dies that produced early American coinage.
