This is the 1809/6 overdate variety of the 1809 Classic Head Half Cent. PCGS calls it 1809/6, while NGC describes the last digit as a 9 punched over a 9 that was first entered upside down, not a re-dated die. The effect is in the die, so every coin struck from it carries the same remnant in the same position. Any mintage given below counts the entire issue for this date and mint, not this variety: a variety comes from one die or a few, and how many coins they struck was never separately recorded. Produced at the Philadelphia Mint, the 1809 Classic Head Half Cent - 1809/6, 9 over Inverted 9 is part of the Classic Head Half Cents 1809-1836 series. The 1809 Classic Head Half Cent issue as a whole had a mintage of 1.2 million; how many coins carry this variety is unknown. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a fillet or headband inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a wreath enclosing HALF CENT. First year of the Classic Head Half Cent. Multiple Cohen die varieties exist. Struck in copper, weighing 5.44 grams, 23.5 mm in diameter, with a plain edge. Cataloged as PCGS #1126.
