Description
The 1795 Liberty Cap Cent - Jefferson Head, Plain Edge was struck privately by John Harper of Philadelphia, not by the Mint, and is collected with the Liberty Cap Cents 1793-1796 series. No mintage was recorded for the Jefferson Head cents, which NGC says John Harper struck as samples of his work while seeking a coinage contract. The obverse features Liberty facing right with a Phrygian cap on a pole behind her head, symbolizing freedom and the reverse displays a wreath enclosing ONE CENT and 1/100 of a dollar. Lettered Edge and Plain Edge varieties exist. Multiple Sheldon die varieties cataloged. Struck in copper, weighing 10.89 grams, 28 mm in diameter, with a plain edge. Cataloged as PCGS #1386.
