Description

Judd-21 is a copper die trial of the 1795 Flowing Hair half dime. Like the 1794 copper half dime die trials, this piece was struck in copper to test the dies before committing to silver production. The obverse features the Flowing Hair portrait of Liberty facing right with stars flanking the portrait, LIBERTY above, and the date 1795 below. The reverse displays the standard small eagle within a wreath encircled by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. While the regular-issue 1795 half dimes in silver have an estimated mintage of 78,600, this copper die trial is among the rarest early American patterns. The 1795 half dime marked the second and final year of the Flowing Hair design for the half dime denomination, as the Draped Bust design would replace it beginning in 1796. This is an extremely rare coin be unique or nearly so, and is permanently impounded in an institutional collection.
