About This Coin
The 1795 Draped Bust Dollar is a United States dollar from the Draped Bust Dollars 1795-1804 series — the first year of the series. The usual figure for 1795 Draped Bust dollars is 42,738, reconstructed from the year's deliveries; Q. David Bowers estimated 110,000, and the Mint reported 203,033 dollars of both designs for 1795. The obverse features Liberty facing right with draped bust and ribbon-bound hair, a portrait traditionally credited to Gilbert Stuart, and the reverse displays a small eagle standing on a cloud, inside an open wreath. First year of the Draped Bust Dollar, though the design overlaps with the late Flowing Hair type. Off-center bust and centered bust subtypes exist. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 26.96 grams, 40 mm in diameter, with a lettered: hundred cents one dollar or unit edge. The Coinage Act of 1792 set a legal standard of 89.24% silver, but the Mint was striking its dollars at 90% in 1795. Designed by Robert Scot/John Eckstein.
