Description
A dollar from the Philadelphia Mint, the 1795 Draped Bust, Off-Center Dollar belongs to the Draped Bust Dollars 1795-1804 series. The obverse features Liberty facing right with draped bust and ribbon-bound hair, a portrait traditionally credited to Gilbert Stuart, and the reverse displays a small eagle standing on a cloud, inside an open wreath. First year of the Draped Bust Dollar, though the design overlaps with the late Flowing Hair type. Off-center bust and centered bust subtypes exist. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 26.96 grams, 40 mm in diameter, with a lettered: hundred cents one dollar or unit edge. The 90% given here is the fineness the Mint was using in 1795; the 1792 Act's legal standard was 89.24% silver. Cataloged as PCGS #96858.
