Description
Dating to just the second year of regular cent production at the fledgling United States Mint in Philadelphia, this 1794 Liberty Cap large cent of the Head of 1794 variety displays an unusual die crack on the obverse. The crack originates at the rim near the 9 o'clock position and runs northeast into Liberty's flowing hair, following an irregular path that distinguishes it from the more common straight rim-to-rim cracks found on early copper coinage. Unusual die cracks differ from standard varieties in that they branch, curve, or form distinctive patterns rather than following predictable stress lines through the die steel. Early American large cents were struck on hand-operated screw presses using relatively soft copper die steel, making die cracks a frequent occurrence that copper specialists have cataloged extensively. The Head of 1794 subvariety refers to the specific portrait style used that year, as Liberty Cap cent obverse designs evolved noticeably from year to year during the 1790s. Surviving examples of 1794 large cents with documented die cracks provide valuable evidence about die life and press conditions in the early Mint.
