Description
The 1794 Flowing Hair Half Dollar is a half dollar produced at the Philadelphia Mint as part of the Flowing Hair Half Dollars 1794-1795 series. With a mintage of 23,464, this is a scarce issue. The obverse features Liberty facing right with flowing hair, surrounded by stars, while the reverse displays a small, naturalistic eagle perched on a palm branch within a wreath. Designed by Robert Scot. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 13.48 grams, 32.5 mm in diameter, with a lettered: fifty cents or half a dollar edge. Cataloged as PCGS #6051. The Flowing Hair Half Dollar was among the first silver coins struck at the Philadelphia Mint. Both dates are scarce early American coins. The 1794 is particularly rare in high grades. These coins represent the beginning of U.S. silver half dollar coinage.
