Description

A half dollar from the Philadelphia Mint, the 1795 Flowing Hair Half Dollar - Small Head belongs to the Flowing Hair Half Dollars 1794-1795 series. The 1795 half dollar's mintage of 299,680 is for the issue as a whole; the Small Head coins were never counted separately. The obverse features Liberty facing right with flowing hair, surrounded by stars, and the reverse displays a small eagle within an open wreath. Second and final year of the Flowing Hair Half Dollar. One 1795 obverse die has a boldly recut date. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 13.48 grams, 32.5 mm in diameter, with a lettered: fifty cents or half a dollar edge. The Mint used 90% silver here rather than the 89.24% the Coinage Act of 1792 called for. Cataloged as PCGS #6054.
