About This Coin
The 1794 Flowing Hair Half Dollar is a United States half dollar from the Flowing Hair Half Dollars 1794-1795 series. The obverse features Liberty facing right with flowing hair, surrounded by stars, while the reverse displays a small, naturalistic eagle perched on a palm branch within a wreath. Designed by Robert Scot. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 13.48 grams, 32.5 mm in diameter, with a lettered: fifty cents or half a dollar edge. The Flowing Hair Half Dollar was among the first silver coins struck at the Philadelphia Mint. Only two dates exist: 1794 and 1795. The design closely mirrors the contemporary Flowing Hair Dollar. Both dates are scarce early American coins. The 1794 is particularly rare in high grades. These coins represent the beginning of U.S. silver half dollar coinage.
