About This Coin
The 1794 Flowing Hair Half Dime is a United States dime from the Flowing Hair Half Dimes 1794-1795 series. The obverse features Liberty facing right with flowing hair, surrounded by stars, while the reverse displays a small, naturalistic eagle perched on a palm branch within a wreath. Designed by Robert Scot. Weighing 1.35 grams, 16.5 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. The Flowing Hair Half Dime was among the first coins struck by the U.S. Mint. The 1792 half disme (the earlier spelling) may have been struck before the Mint was officially established, possibly at the request of President Washington himself. Early American numismatic treasures. The 1794 and 1795 are the only regular-issue dates. All examples are scarce and historically significant.
