Description
This represents the finest known specimen designation of the Judd-11 1792 copper Disme with plain edge. The Special Strike or Specimen classification by grading services distinguishes coins that show evidence of careful striking on select planchets, consistent with presentation-quality pieces. The Bruce Sherman/Heritage specimen graded MS64 Red and Brown by PCGS with CAC verification is distinguished from other known J-11 examples by its exceptional preservation and remarkable retention of original mint red color — an extraordinary survival condition for a coin struck over 230 years ago. The obverse and reverse designs are identical to the standard J-11: Liberty facing left with "LIBERTY PARENT OF SCIENCE & INDUST." on the obverse, and an eagle in flight with "DISME" below on the reverse. This specimen's extraordinary color and condition suggest it was deliberately preserved from the time of striking, as a presentation piece for government officials overseeing the new Mint's early operations in 1792.
Rarity Notes
