Description

A second die combination sharing the "1 Over Horizontal 1" fraction feature with the "United States" reverse legend, this 1787 Fugio cent represents a distinct die marriage from the other listing bearing the same variety name. Multiple die combinations exhibiting the same overpunched fraction may indicate the feature originated in the master die or hub, carrying the anomaly into each derivative working die. The horizontal "1" overlapping the vertical "1" in the 1/13 fraction creates a cross-like formation visible under magnification — a diagnostic that, combined with the specific reverse die pairing, allows precise attribution within Newman's die marriage system. The Fugio cent, as the first congressionally authorized U.S. coinage, elevates even minor die varieties to scholarly and collecting significance. The obverse sundial with FUGIO and MIND YOUR BUSINESS pairs with the reverse chain of thirteen links bearing WE ARE ONE. Production occurred at New Haven under James Jarvis's contract, struck in copper. The Newman reference distinguishes between die combinations sharing visible features but differing in their specific die pairings. Moderately scarce.
