(1781) White Metal Medal Betts-597, Rev Cliche Nathanael Greene
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
Betts-597 reverse cliche in white metal preserves the reverse die of the Nathanael Greene Comitia Americana medal. The reverse design depicts a scene from Greene's Southern Campaign, featuring military action or allegorical imagery celebrating his strategic achievements. Greene's campaign in the Carolinas and Georgia during 1780-1781 systematically recaptured territory and exhausted British forces without winning a single major battle -- a feat of strategic genius that earned him Congressional recognition and this medal. The reverse cliche preserves the narrative engraving of the battle scene in thin white metal, complementing the obverse portrait cliche (PCGS #825285). Together they document the complete design of one of the most important Comitia Americana medals. Reverse cliches are particularly valued because they preserve the more complex narrative scenes that are often the most artistically accomplished faces of Comitia Americana medals.
Rarity Notes
White metal reverse cliche of the Greene medal. Companion to the obverse cliche. Very scarce.
