(1781) White Metal Medal Betts-597, Obv Cliche Nathanael Greene
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
Betts-597 obverse cliche in white metal is a thin uniface impression from the portrait die of the Nathanael Greene Comitia Americana medal. This delicate piece preserves Greene's likeness as engraved for the Paris Mint, capturing the features of the general whose Southern Campaign was one of the most brilliant military operations of the American Revolution. White metal cliches were produced as die samples, collector pieces, or archival records of the die state. The obverse cliche format shows only the portrait side of the medal, isolated from the reverse design, allowing close study of the engraver's portrait technique. Greene cliches, like all Comitia Americana cliches, are collected as part of the complete documentary record of these historically important dies. The fragile white metal composition makes preservation challenging, and examples in good condition are genuinely scarce.
Rarity Notes
