(1781) Bronze Medal J-MI-8, Modern Restirke Washington at Cowpens
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
The circa 1781 bronze modern restrike of the military medal cataloged as Julian MI-8 honors Lieutenant Colonel William Washington at the Battle of Cowpens. This modern restrike was produced using original or replacement dies at a later date to satisfy collector demand for this Revolutionary War medal. The obverse reproduces the portrait of William Washington, and the reverse carries the commemorative imagery of the Cowpens engagement. Modern restrikes are distinguishable from earlier productions through differences in surface texture, metal composition, and manufacturing characteristics. William Washington's contribution to the Cowpens victory was essential to its completeness. While Daniel Morgan designed the overall tactical plan and John Eager Howard commanded the infantry with precision, it was Washington's cavalry that converted the British confusion into catastrophe by charging at exactly the right moment to prevent any orderly retreat. The coordination between infantry and cavalry at Cowpens has been studied as a model of combined-arms tactics ever since.
Rarity Notes
Modern restrike produced in quantities for general collector availability. More affordable than earlier bronze strikes.
