Description
This 1780 silver medal (Betts-572) is another Armed Neutrality piece, a different design from Betts-571 (PCGS #926049) but commemorating the same diplomatic event. The existence of multiple medal designs for the Armed Neutrality reflects the international significance of the league, which was celebrated by France, the Netherlands, and other nations that welcomed any development that weakened Britain's naval dominance. The Armed Neutrality declared that neutral nations had the right to trade freely with belligerents and that blockades must be effective to be legal — principles that would later become foundations of international maritime law. European medallic art of this era served as an official record of imperial achievements, with court-appointed medalists crafting pieces that communicated territorial claims and military victories to educated audiences across the continent. For the American cause, the league was invaluable because it limited Britain's ability to prevent European trade with the rebellious colonies.
