(1779) Silvered Bronze Medal J-MI-3, General Anthony Wayne
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
The circa 1779 silvered bronze military medal cataloged as Julian MI-3 honors Brigadier General Anthony Wayne for the capture of Stony Point. The silvered finish provides a brighter, more reflective appearance than standard bronze, approximating the look of solid silver at reduced production cost. The obverse features Wayne's military portrait, and the reverse carries imagery commemorating the Stony Point assault of July 16, 1779. The silvered bronze format represents a premium finish applied to a limited number of bronze strikes. The Stony Point assault was meticulously planned to exploit the vulnerabilities of the British position. Wayne divided his force into two columns that approached from opposite sides under cover of darkness, with unloaded muskets to prevent premature firing that would alert the garrison. The attack succeeded in approximately thirty minutes, capturing the entire British garrison of over 600 soldiers with relatively few American casualties. Washington had Wayne dismantle the fortifications after the capture, as the position could not be held against British naval superiority on the Hudson.
Rarity Notes
Silvered bronze finish produced in limited quantities. Scarcer than standard bronze but more available than solid silver examples.
