Description
This 1777 silver medal (Betts-556) is the silver version of the Battle of Germantown medal, carrying greater value and scarcity than the bronze (PCGS #889614). The Battle of Germantown on October 4, 1777 was part of Washington's Philadelphia Campaign, fought just two weeks after the British had captured the American capital at Philadelphia. Washington's decision to attack rather than retreat demonstrated the resilience and offensive capability of the Continental Army. The silver composition indicates this was a premium commemorative piece. European medallic art of this era served as an official record of imperial achievements, with court-appointed medalists crafting pieces that communicated territorial claims and military victories to educated audiences across the continent. Combined with the Saratoga victory on October 17, 1777, the Germantown attack convinced the French court that the Americans were serious military partners worthy of an alliance, leading to the Treaty of Alliance signed in February 1778.
Rarity Notes
Original 1777 silver. Silver Germantown medals are scarcer than bronze. Rare.
