Description
This 1777 bronze medal (Betts-556) commemorates the Battle of Germantown, fought on October 4, 1777, when George Washington launched a surprise attack on the British garrison at Germantown, Pennsylvania. Although the attack ultimately failed due to fog, confusion, and fierce British resistance at the Chew House, the boldness of the assault impressed European observers and contributed to France's decision to recognize American independence and enter the war as an ally. The Battle of Germantown is often overlooked in popular history but was strategically significant — it demonstrated that the Continental Army could mount coordinated offensive operations against British regulars. The tradition of striking commemorative medals for New World events began with Spanish and Portuguese pieces in the sixteenth century, expanded through Dutch and French production in the seventeenth, and reached its peak with British issues during the colonial wars. This bronze medal documents an important but underappreciated engagement of the Revolution.
