(1776) Libertas Americana Medal - 1oz Silver Paris Mint 2020 Restrike
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
A modern silver restrike of the Libertas Americana medal produced by the Monnaie de Paris (Paris Mint) in 2020, struck in one troy ounce of .999 fine silver. This official restrike was authorized by the Paris Mint as part of its program to re-issue historically significant medals from its extensive die archive, making the iconic Dupre design accessible to modern collectors who could not hope to acquire an original 1783 striking. The obverse faithfully reproduces Augustin Dupre's celebrated bust of Liberty with the LIBERTAS AMERICANA inscription and 4 JUIL. 1776 date. The reverse presents the infant Hercules strangling serpents under Minerva's protection, with the NON SINE DIIS ANIMOSUS INFANS legend. While the design elements follow the original composition, the 2020 restrike can be distinguished from 1783 originals by its precisely finished surfaces, modern minting quality, and the addition of Paris Mint privy marks and hallmarks that identify it as a contemporary product. The restrike diameter of 46.8 millimeters is slightly smaller than the original 47.5mm, reflecting the use of modern production standards. The one-ounce silver weight provides a convenient precious metal content for the bullion-oriented collector market, differing from the heavier original silver medals. Edge markings or inscriptions specific to the 2020 issue further distinguish restrikes from originals. These Paris Mint restrikes serve an important educational and commemorative purpose, bringing the extraordinary artistry of Dupre's design to a broad audience. The Libertas Americana remains one of the most visually striking and historically significant medals in the Franco-American tradition, and the 2020 silver restrike allows collectors to own a faithful reproduction struck from the same institution that produced the originals over two centuries earlier.
