Description
The 1776 Copper New Hampshire is filed under New Hampshire Copper Coins in the Post-1776 Private and Regional Issues (1778-1820) series. New Hampshire was the first state to consider a copper coinage after independence. A committee reported in 1776 that William Moulton should be empowered to make coppers, and on June 28, 1776 the House voted that coppers with a pine tree and AMERICAN LIBERTY on one side and a harp and 1776 on the other could be exchanged at the treasury. Crosby thought patterns were made but little if any of the coin circulated. Crosby describes a worn copper in the Stickney collection matching the June 1776 vote, heavier than the weight the vote specified. PCGS lists it as #286.
