Description
This 1739 bronze medal, cataloged as Adams-Chao PBv 44-UU, shares obverse die 44 with PBv 44-NN but pairs it with double-letter reverse UU. The UU reverse represents one of the most advanced double-letter designations in the PBv series, well past the midpoint of the second alphabetical pass. The dual pairing of obverse 44 — with both NN and UU reverses — confirms that this very late obverse die was used with at least two different reverses, following the pattern seen with other high-numbered obverses. Struck in copper alloy (AE), the PBv 44-UU variety is among the rarest medals in the entire Vernon series. The combination of obverse die 44 with such an advanced double-letter reverse places this at the absolute frontier of recorded Vernon medal production. Collectors who encounter either PBv 44 pairing consider it a significant acquisition, as varieties at this level appear only rarely in the numismatic marketplace.
Rarity Notes
Extremely rare. One of the highest known PBv die pairings, with minimal surviving population.
