Description
This 1739 bronze medal, cataloged as Adams-Chao PBv 44-NN, pairs obverse die 44 with double-letter reverse NN, the same reverse previously paired with obverse 41 in PBv 41-NN. The forty-fourth portrait die is among the very highest obverse die numbers in the entire Vernon medal catalog. The reuse of reverse NN with obverse die 44 after its earlier pairing with obverse 41 shows that this reverse die remained in service across at least four obverse die iterations (assuming sequential production). Struck in copper alloy (AE), the PBv 44-NN variety represents the absolute pinnacle of Vernon portrait medal die production. At this level, each variety may survive in only one or two known examples. The reverse-sharing link between PBv 41-NN and 44-NN creates a collecting pair that spans four obverse die progressions, documenting the sustained use of a durable reverse die through the final phase of PBv production.
Rarity Notes
Extremely rare. One of the very highest PBv die pairings, approaching the absolute maximum.
