Description

This 1739 bronze medal, cataloged as Adams-Chao PBv 41-U, shares obverse die 41 with the PBv 41-NN variety but pairs it with a single-letter reverse U. Like the PBv 32-X cross-phase pairing, this combination of a very high obverse die with an earlier single-letter reverse demonstrates the practice of combining dies from different production phases. Reverse die U was cut during the initial phase of PBv reverse production and retained in usable condition long enough to be paired with one of the final obverse dies. This pairing strategy maximized the value of existing dies and created additional varieties without requiring new reverse die investment. Struck in copper alloy (AE), the PBv 41-U variety is a particularly interesting example of the die-sharing dynamics that characterize the advanced Vernon medal production system. The contrast between the high obverse and lower reverse die numbers provides evidence for the chronological layering of the production process.

Rarity Notes

Extremely rare. A cross-phase pairing combining one of the highest obverse dies with an earlier reverse.
