Description
This 1739 bronze medal, cataloged as Adams-Chao PBv 36-II, pairs obverse die 36 with double-letter reverse II. The thirty-sixth portrait die in the PBv series is near the absolute maximum of recorded die production for any Vernon medal subgroup. At this level, each additional obverse die represents a remarkable investment of time and skill for what must have been a very small production run. Reverse II continues the double-letter progression past HH. The PBv 36-II combination documents the furthest extremes of the Vernon medal phenomenon, where die sinkers continued producing new varieties long past the point of commercial rationality. Struck in copper alloy (AE), this medal is among the rarest Vernon medal varieties and commands a premium among specialized collectors. The thirty-sixth obverse die demonstrates a level of variety production that approaches the obsessive, reflecting either a committed workshop's determination to exhaust every possible combination or intense collector demand for new and different varieties.
Rarity Notes
Very rare. Among the highest PBv die numbers recorded, with very few surviving examples.
