Description
This 1739 bronze medal, cataloged as Adams-Chao PBv 24-S, pairs obverse die 24 with reverse die S, which was previously paired with obverse 22 in the PBv 22-S variety. The reuse of reverse die S with a new obverse 24 extends the die-sharing network and creates a collecting link between PBv 22-S and 24-S. The twenty-fourth portrait die in the PBv series represents an extremely advanced production number, suggesting that the die sinker (or workshop) that controlled reverse S continued cutting new obverse dies to create fresh varieties. Struck in copper alloy (AE), the PBv 24-S variety documents the resourcefulness of medal producers who maximized the commercial value of each die by pairing it with multiple counterparts. The Vernon medal phenomenon generated more die varieties than any previous English commemorative subject, and the PBv subgroup's extensive roster — with obverse die numbers reaching the mid-twenties — exemplifies this unprecedented production scale.
Rarity Notes
Rare. One of the highest PBv obverse die numbers, sharing a reverse with PBv 22-S.
