1717-Q Six Deniers
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
The 1717 Six Deniers is a small French colonial copper coin worth half a sou, struck at the Perpignan mint (mint mark Q) under the authority of Philippe II, Duke of Orléans (regent for Louis XV). An edict of December 1716 ordered copper pieces of 6 and 12 deniers for the colonies at the Perpignan mint (mint mark Q), and a royal edict of March 9, 1717 made them legal tender in Canada. Three million six-denier and one and a half million twelve-denier pieces were authorized, but the copper delivered to the mint was poor, and the work stopped after trials, so only a few of each denomination survive. Jambu adds that a few were shipped to New France.
