1662 Twopence Oak Tree - Small 2
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
A die variety of the Oak Tree twopence featuring a noticeably smaller numeral "2" on the reverse compared to the Large 2 variety. The size of the denomination figure is the primary distinguishing characteristic between the two major twopence subtypes, and on the Small 2 the numeral appears more delicately rendered and proportionally modest within the central field. The obverse presents the small oak tree encircled by MASATHVSETS IN, while the reverse shows the diminutive II (or Arabic 2) within the beaded inner border, surrounded by NEW ENGLAND AN DOM 1662. The overall design follows the standard format established for all Oak Tree denominations, adapted to the smallest planchet in the series at roughly 15 millimeters diameter. The Small 2 variety represents a later die in the production sequence, cut after the original Large 2 die wore out, or it reflects the work of a different engraver at the Hull Mint. Without surviving production records, the chronological relationship between die varieties must be inferred from die state evidence — the progressive deterioration of a die through use leaves characteristic marks that indicate the order in which dies were employed. Distinguishing between Large 2 and Small 2 varieties requires direct comparison, ideally with reference specimens of each type. The difference, while real and consistent across multiple surviving examples, can be difficult to appreciate on heavily worn specimens where the central numeral has lost definition. Both varieties command strong interest from colonial specialists, and complete collections of Massachusetts silver by die variety represent one of the most challenging pursuits in American numismatics.
Rarity Notes
Rare. Comparable in scarcity to the Large 2 variety, with slightly fewer known examples based on auction census data.
