Description

A distinctive die variety of the Oak Tree shilling characterized by a tree with unusually angular, pointed branches that give the trunk and crown a thorny or spiny appearance rather than the rounded, leafy profile seen on most Oak Tree dies. This sharp-branched tree form stands out immediately from the more naturalistic oak tree depictions found on other die varieties in the series, making it one of the most visually recognizable subtypes. The obverse carries the spiny tree surrounded by the legend MASATHVSETS IN, while the reverse follows the standard format with XII at center and NEW ENGLAND AN DOM 1652 around the periphery. The distinctive tree form is the work of a specific die sinker — a different engraver than those responsible for the more conventional oak tree designs, or the same craftsman working in a different style or at a different point in his career. Because each obverse die in the Massachusetts colonial series was individually hand-engraved, the tree depictions vary considerably. Some show lush, broad-crowned oaks; others present more stylized or geometric interpretations. The Spiny Tree variety falls at the extreme end of this spectrum, with its angular branches creating an almost abstract quality that some collectors find particularly appealing. The Hull Mint operated from approximately 1652 to 1682, and during the Oak Tree period (c. 1660-1667) multiple die pairs were needed to sustain production. The Spiny Tree obverse die is one of the more distinctive products of this workshop, and its unusual character has made it a favorite among collectors who seek the full range of artistic expression within the series.

Rarity Notes

Rare die variety. One of the most visually distinctive Oak Tree shilling dies, eagerly sought by colonial specialists.
