1662 Twopence Oak Tree - Large 2
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
A recognized die variety of the Oak Tree twopence distinguished by a large numeral "2" on the reverse, representing the denomination of two pence. The size of the central numeral varies between die varieties and serves as a primary diagnostic for attribution. On the Large 2 variety, the denomination figure occupies a noticeably greater proportion of the central field compared to the Small 2 variety, making it one of the more readily identifiable distinctions in the Oak Tree twopence series. The obverse carries the miniature oak tree within the MASATHVSETS IN legend, while the reverse displays the large II (or Arabic 2, depending on the specific die) within the beaded border and the dating legend NEW ENGLAND AN DOM 1662. The unique 1662 date marks the twopence as a later addition to the Massachusetts coinage program, authorized ten years after the original shilling, sixpence, and threepence. At approximately 15 millimeters in diameter, the Oak Tree twopence is a tiny coin that demanded precision from the die sinker. The relative size of the denomination numeral was one of the few design decisions available within such a small field, and the difference between the Large 2 and Small 2 varieties reflects the work of different die sinkers or different periods of die production during the Oak Tree coinage era. The twopence denomination was practical but fragile. Its small size and low face value meant that these coins were easily lost and subjected to heavy wear in circulation. Despite this, the Oak Tree twopence survives in somewhat greater numbers than many other Massachusetts colonial types, because the 1662 date made them objects of curiosity even in their own time.
Rarity Notes
Rare. The Large 2 is one of the more recognizable Oak Tree twopence varieties, with approximately two to three dozen examples traceable across major collections and auction records.
