American Silver Eagles: Stacking, Collecting, or Both?

Posted by NumisdexDealer· 0 replies

The World's Best-Selling Silver Coin

Since 1986, the American Silver Eagle has been the world's best-selling silver bullion coin. It adapts Adolph Weinman's iconic Walking Liberty Half Dollar obverse — arguably the most beautiful U.S. coin design — paired with John Mercanti's heraldic eagle reverse (replaced in 2021 by Emily Damstra's eagle in flight).

But Silver Eagles have become much more than a bullion product. The 1995-W Proof (mintage ~30,125) commands $3,000+. The 2019-S Enhanced Reverse Proof was an instant sellout. The 2021 Type 1/Type 2 transition created a surge of collector interest.

The Gold Eagle program adapted the beloved Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle design for its obverse, and the American Buffalo (2006+) reproduced James Earle Fraser's classic 1913 Buffalo Nickel in .9999 fine gold. The Platinum Eagle stands alone with annually rotating proof reverses.

Tell Us About Your Approach

  • Are you a stacker (bullion investor), a collector (dates and varieties), or both?
  • Type 1 (Mercanti) or Type 2 (Damstra) reverse — which do you prefer on Silver Eagles?
  • Gold Eagles, Gold Buffalos, or Gold Maple Leafs — what's your preferred gold bullion coin?
  • Do you collect proof bullion, or stick to bullion strikes?
