The obverse depicts sun rays emerging through storm clouds, representing the dawn of a new nation from the turmoil of revolution and Enlightenment ideals. A quill — symbolizing the Declaration's drafting — sweeps over the landscape. Thirteen stars along the border represent the original colonies.
