SD-1c-1798-01R Split Die
Error
Description
Recorded as Stage A, this first documented reverse split die on the 1798 Draped Bust Cent with the Reverse of 1795 configuration captures one of the most dramatic forms of die failure in early American coinage. A split die occurs when a working die develops a major crack that propagates across the entire die face, effectively splitting it into two or more sections. Unlike cuds, which involve rim-area fractures, and unlike simple die cracks, which are linear but contained, a split die represents a catastrophic structural failure where the die has fractured through its full working surface. Stage A indicates this is the earliest documented state of the split, when the crack is present but the die sections have not yet separated significantly. The "Reverse of 1795" designation identifies the specific reverse die style used — in early large cent production, reverse dies often outlasted their intended production year and were paired with newer obverse dies, creating transitional die combinations that the Sheldon attribution system meticulously tracks. The 1798 Draped Bust Cent was produced at the Philadelphia Mint using hand-engraved dies struck on heavy copper planchets, and the forces required to impress the design into these substantial blanks placed enormous stress on die steel that was, by modern standards, relatively inconsistent in quality. Cataloged by Cuds on Coins, SD-1c-1798-01R documents a die that reached the terminal stage of its useful life, providing evidence of both the physical limits of early die technology and the Mint's willingness to continue using damaged dies when replacements were not immediately available.
