Description

Civil War patriotic token combining Fuld obverse die 513, a Southern sympathizer design inscribed "NO SUBMISSION TO THE NORTH," one of the provocative secession pieces from the 1860 campaign, with reverse die 514 bearing the provocative inscription "NO SUBMISSION TO THE NORTH". This Southern sympathizer legend appeared on Benjamin True's secession series. This die belongs to Benjamin True's 1860 presidential campaign series. True's Cincinnati workshop produced tokens for all political factions, including pro-secession designs that are now among the most valuable and historically significant pieces in the entire patriotic token series. Copper was the standard metal for patriotic tokens, chosen because cent-sized copper pieces could pass as substitute federal cents in everyday commerce. This undated token was struck during the Civil War coin shortage era of 1862-1864, when most patriotic token production occurred.

Rarity Notes

Fuld 513/514a. Die pairing: obverse 513, reverse 514. Copper is the most common composition, representing the majority of surviving specimens. The Fuld rarity scale ranges from R-1 (over 5,000 known) to R-10 (unique); survival depends on the specific die combination, metal, and condition.
