Description

Fuld WV-890A-2a decodes as WV for West Virginia, 890 for Wheeling, A for Bassett's, then die pair 2, with the copper letter (a). It is dated 1863. The brass striking of these dies, 2b, is described in a dealer's catalog entry as a Bassett's dry goods card of Wheeling dated 1863, and the dealer gives its reverse as die 1089. Wheeling became the first capital of the new state of West Virginia in 1863.
