Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
Civil War store card from Connecticut, cataloged as Fuld 560A2B. Connecticut was an arms-making center, with Colt in Hartford and the New Haven Arms Company. This undated token was struck circa 1862-1864 during the wartime coin shortage. Die sinkers offered several metals; copper was the most used, and silver strikings were made for collectors. The token era ended in 1864, when Congress authorized a bronze cent and two-cent piece and outlawed private tokens. After Congress banned private tokens in 1864, the Mint began striking bronze cents and a new two-cent piece, which ended the shortage.
