Description
Civil War store card from Illinois, cataloged as Fuld 150WA-1B. Illinois was a critical Union state with Chicago rapidly becoming one of America's largest commercial centers, driving token production across the state. This undated token was struck circa 1862-1864 during the wartime coin shortage. Die sinkers offered several metals; copper was the most used, and silver strikings were made for collectors. The token era ended in 1864, when Congress authorized a bronze cent and two-cent piece and outlawed private tokens. Collectors were buying Civil War tokens from the makers during the war itself, including rare die pairings and off-metal strikes.
