Description

This undated bronze restrike of the William Pitt medal (Betts-515) was produced at an undocumented date, during the nineteenth century when interest in Revolutionary-era medals prompted ongoing restrike production. The absence of a date distinguishes this from the specifically dated Civil War-era restrikes (PCGS #541614, #541628, #889623) and indicates it was produced outside the major restrike campaigns, as a private commission or commercial enterprise. The original Betts-515 medal honored William Pitt the Elder for his defense of colonial rights against the Stamp Act in 1766. The enduring demand for Pitt medal restrikes throughout the nineteenth century reflects the continuing American reverence for the British statesman who championed their cause in Parliament during the crisis that led to the Revolution.

Rarity Notes
