Description
Betts-521 in bronze is another William Pitt medal variety from 1766, adding to the extensive series honoring the statesman who defended American colonial rights against parliamentary taxation. Betts-521 features a distinct die design from the other Pitt numbers (514-520), contributing its own artistic interpretation to the series. Pitt's defense of the American position in the Stamp Act debate made him the most celebrated Englishman in the colonies. Cities throughout America named streets, towns, and public buildings after him -- Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, being the most famous example. The production of multiple medal varieties honoring Pitt demonstrates the intensity of colonial gratitude and the commercial market for patriotic commemoratives that could be sold to Americans eager to display their allegiance to their parliamentary champion. The Pitt medal series represents an early example of political celebrity culture in the American colonies.
