ND Confederate States Five Dollar - Silver, J.J. Conway & Co.
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
The undated Confederate States Five Dollar in silver attributed to J.J. Conway & Company is a restrike produced circa 1960 from dies associated with the original Conway mint. The silver composition places these pieces between the common copper restrikes and the rare goldine versions in terms of both metal value and collector desirability. Silver restrikes provide an interesting comparison point for studying the Conway dies, as the white metal surface reveals design details differently than copper or goldine compositions. The dies used for these restrikes may be the original 1861 dies or copies made from them. The production of silver Conway restrikes in the mid-twentieth century coincided with a broader surge of interest in territorial and pioneer gold coinage among American numismatists. These pieces helped introduce a new generation of collectors to Colorado territorial coinage history.
Rarity Notes
Scarce. Silver Conway restrikes are less common than the copper version but more available than goldine.
