ND Confederate States Five Dollar - Goldine, J.J. Conway & Co.
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
The undated Confederate States Five Dollar in goldine attributed to J.J. Conway & Company is a restrike produced circa 1960 in a gold-colored alloy intended to evoke the appearance of the original gold coins. Goldine is a brass-like alloy that produces a warm yellow color similar to low-karat gold. The goldine composition makes these restrikes the most visually similar to the original gold Conway coins among the three known restrike metals (copper, silver, and goldine). The golden color provides collectors with an approximation of how the original 1861 Conway coins appeared. Goldine Conway restrikes are the scarcest of the three restrike compositions, indicating a smaller production run in this material. Their gold-like appearance contributed to the smaller mintage, as producers was concerned about the pieces being confused with genuine territorial gold.
Rarity Notes
Scarce but the scarcest of the three Conway restrike compositions. Less available than copper or silver versions.
