Description
First documented reverse rim cud for the 1995 Philadelphia Mint Kennedy Half Dollar, this variety records a die rim failure on the reverse of a date closely associated with the famous 1995 doubled die obverse cent that generated massive collector interest across all 1995 coinage. A rim cud represents the loss of part of the die's rim gutter: on the coin it appears as a raised interruption in the design rim that tracks the rim's course. The "R" suffix specifies this fracture appeared on the reverse die, which carries the heraldic eagle design and surrounding inscription. Kennedy Half Dollars from the mid-1990s were produced primarily for collector demand rather than general circulation, as the denomination had largely disappeared from everyday commerce — most 1995-P halves were distributed through Mint Sets and bank-wrapped rolls ordered by collectors. Cataloged by Cuds on Coins under reference CU-50c-1995P-01R, this variety is one of two documented rim cuds for 1995-P, alongside CU-50c-1995P-02R.
