Third documented rim cud for the 1983 Philadelphia Mint Kennedy Half Dollar, CU-50c-1983P-03 records another instance of catastrophic die rim failure during the production of clad half dollars at the nation's primary minting facility. The "-03" suffix indicates that two other cuds (CU-50c-1983P-01 and -02) have been cataloged for the same date-mint, suggesting that 1983 Philadelphia half dollar dies experienced an above-average rate of rim fracture — a pattern that could reflect die steel quality, hardening inconsistencies, or the cumulative stress of extended press runs on individual dies. Kennedy Half Dollar production by 1983 had diminished significantly from the massive outputs of the late 1960s and early 1970s; half dollars were increasingly seen as surplus in everyday commerce, and production was oriented more toward collector sets and Mint-wrapped rolls than toward bank-order circulation demand. Gilroy Roberts's obverse portrait of President Kennedy and Frank Gasparro's heraldic eagle reverse were struck in copper-nickel clad composition (91.67% copper, 8.33% nickel bonded to copper) at 11.34 grams on 30.61mm planchets. A rim cud manifests as a raised, featureless blob of metal at the coin's edge where the die fragment broke away, leaving a void in the striking chamber that the planchet metal filled under pressure. The resulting raised mass interrupts whatever design element occupied that portion of the rim — lettering, stars, or the portrait — creating a permanent, unmistakable signature on every coin struck after the break occurred and before the die was retired.
