Description

Combining two cataloged rim cuds, CU-1c-1863-01 and -06, on a single 1863 Indian Head Cent, this dual-designation variety documents an unusually advanced state of die deterioration where the rim fractured at two separate locations on the same die. Each rim cud represents the loss of part of the die's rim gutter, which appears on the coin as a raised interruption in the design rim that tracks the rim's course. Finding two independent cuds on one coin indicates that the die had reached an extreme Late Die State where multiple rim sections had failed, yet the die continued in service — a testament to the Philadelphia Mint's reluctance to retire dies prematurely during the Civil War era. The 1863 Indian Head Cent was struck during the height of the American Civil War, a period when coins were hoarded for their metal content and effectively disappeared from circulation, leading to widespread use of fractional currency and private tokens as substitutes. Despite the hoarding crisis, the Philadelphia Mint continued cent production, striking over 49 million 1863 cents in copper-nickel composition — the alloy used for Indian Head Cents from 1859 through 1864 before the switch to bronze. The copper-nickel planchets were harder than later bronze issues and placed greater stress on dies during striking, potentially accelerating the rim fractures that produced cuds like this dual-position example. This dual-cud variety remains a notable specimen in the Indian Head Cent die variety catalog.
