Description
This brass counter token from circa 1850 features Louis Kossuth, the Hungarian revolutionary leader who became an international celebrity after leading Hungary's failed 1848-49 war of independence against the Habsburg Empire. Kossuth arrived in the United States in December 1851 for a triumphant tour that made him one of the most celebrated foreign visitors in American history. Cities across the country held enormous public receptions, and manufacturers produced a vast array of Kossuth memorabilia including medals, tokens, prints, and pottery. The description "Washington of Hungary" on this counter reflects the common American comparison of Kossuth to George Washington, as both men fought for their nations' independence from European empires. Counter tokens โ game pieces used for card games, board games, and commercial accounting โ were a common form of token production, and featuring Kossuth's portrait on a counter capitalized on his immense popularity. The brass composition and counter format suggest this piece was produced for commercial sale during or shortly after Kossuth's 1851-52 American tour, when public enthusiasm for the Hungarian cause was at its peak. The Kossuth mania eventually faded when the American public realized no practical action would follow the speeches and parades.
Rarity Notes
Kossuth tokens and counters are moderately common given the large quantities produced during the mania of 1851-52. Brass counters are among the more frequently encountered varieties.
