CU-1c-1838-05 Cud

Description

Struck from the 1838 Modified Matron Head Coronet Head Cent dies, this rim cud is cross-referenced as LCC-1838-1 and shares a relationship with CU-1c-1838-06, as both varieties are cataloged together as rim cuds from the same die. The Modified Matron Head design, produced from 1835 through 1839, represents the transitional period between the original Matron Head and the Braided Hair design that followed in 1839, featuring a revised portrait with a more refined hairstyle and slightly different proportions. A cud error forms when a section of the die rim breaks away entirely, and the resulting raised featureless area on struck coins provides a dramatic visual indicator of die failure. Attributed by Cuds on Coins as CU-1c-1838-05, the die that produced this cud evidently suffered multiple rim breaks, as the companion listing CU-1c-1838-06 documents a separate cud from the same die. Multiple cuds from a single die suggest advanced die deterioration, where the initial rim break may have redistributed striking pressure in ways that accelerated additional fractures around the periphery of the already compromised die.
