(c.1860) Token Sage's Historical No. 1 Copper The Old Provoost
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
This copper version of Sage's Historical token number 1 featuring the Old Provoost complements the brass striking cataloged separately. The Provoost was among the oldest structures in New York, dating to the Dutch colonial period when New Amsterdam was governed under the authority of the Dutch West India Company. Charles Sage paired multiple obverse and reverse dies across his token series, creating numerous die combinations that collectors could pursue. The Old Provoost reverse die was combined with several different obverse designs, making it one of the more frequently encountered reverses in the series. The copper composition was the most commonly produced metal for Sage's tokens, following the tradition established by the Hard Times tokens and store cards of the 1830s and 1840s that preceded them.
Rarity Notes
Copper striking. More available than the brass version of the same design.
